I just posted about Sadi and I meeting with Dr. Reid Lombardo and her entourage. Yes, she has an entourage. Who knew that surgeons traveled in packs like Hollywood stars? I think I even saw Turtle in the bunch. I'm sure my imagination runs a bit wild at times, but this was by far one of the more fascinating experiences during my journey at the Mayo and wanted to talk more about this encounter.
FYI: If you haven’t seen the TumorVille Playbill, look up at the navigation for the new link. I’ll be updating that page with the latest schedule of events and people.
Back to Dr. Reid Lombardo's entourage. With her was Dr. Kavanaugh, a resident in training. Two med students who looked more out of place than Snow White at a Reggae concert. And Dr. Leibovich and Dr. Dean, though not officially part of the entourage.
Whenever Dr. Reid Lombardo needed anything, she simply had to look to one of the other people in the room. With a simple comment, someone was on their way to accomplish the task at hand. What struck me during these exchanges is the genuineness of the other person. I've been in many-a-room where someone had made a similar comment to a subordinate or equal, but the person on the receiving end of the request never really seemed to be very genuine in their actions. Rather, it was more like they were doing something that fit into the puzzle of moving up the ladder. But today, these were people who genuinely wanted to participate. Not because it would help their career, but because they wanted to be a part of something greater than the sum of their parts.
Perhaps my experiences at the Mayo are unique since I'm such a unique case, but I highly doubt that to be true. I believe the Mayo instills principals in people. Honesty. The goodness of the human nature. We need to find a way of transcending the Mayo's methods to bring humanity back into the world of commerce. Where people are driven by more than just financial gain. What ever happened to the humanity in the world of business?
I realize my thoughts have diverged from the intent of this post, but this is where my mind took me after experiencing the Reid Lombardo entourage.
Thanks for listening.
